OVERVIEW

The 2002 Sarbanes-Oxley Act came into being to help protect shareholders, employees and the public from financial errors and fraudulent practices. The evolution of this role that has been a preserve of Internal Auditors. This has seen revision of the authoritative guidance by IIA global to elevate the role of Internal Audit to beyond assurance and add value to organizational functions. Themed “Adding Value in a Disruptive Environment”, this workshop will expose participants to discussions on topical issues that demonstrate how members of Boards and Audit committees work with Heads of internal audit to add value to organizations. 

This workshop will focus on the following topics:

  1. Combating Whistleblower Claims: Response Strategy
    There is a push by professional member bodies and lobby groups towards whistleblower protection legislation in Kenya. While experiences from other countries show that this can bring relief to organizations by allowing them to respond, it is important to assess options available to organizations when responding to whistleblower claims. This session will explore the scope of whistleblowing in Kenya, potential damages that whistleblowers can recover and implication of retaliation claims on whistleblowing.  
  2. The Cutting-Edge Auditor: Unleashing the Value of Internal Audit
    This session will focus on the tools and techniques that enable high performing audit teams to make risk-based decisions.
  3. The Future of Cyber Risk
    This session will explore measures that organizations can put in place to curb attacks on their networks such as those that can result from opening malicious emails.
  4. Objective-Centric Risk Management
    Chief Executive Officers and Members of the Board need a deep understanding of how internal audit and risk management approaches have evolved including the justification for using objective-centric risk management. This session will bring to the fore options available to Boards where CEOs fail to implement objective-centric risk management.
  5. Intergenerational Perceptions of Internal Audit Governance
    What do generation y’s think about internal audit governance in comparison to experienced internal audit practitioners? This session will bring out intergenerational perceptions on internal audit governance and explore how boards and audit committees can draw from experiences of different generations.
  6. Assessment for Boards and Audit Committees
    Are the Audit Committee members and Board members that representing Internal Audit activity performing at the highest possible level? The 2021 Institute of Internal Auditors tool was designed to give boards and audit committees assurance that internal auditors are performing their work effectively. This session will expose participants to the newly developed assessment tool for boards
  7. Evolution of Data Governance Regulations
    We are in the big data age where organizations now collect, keep and even use data of their clients to market products. It has become necessary for countries the world over to put in place legislations that regulate how such data can be shared. This session will expose participants to how data legislations and regulations have evolved and what this means for data governance.
  8. Case Study
    Participants will learn from lessons and experiences from other places on how boards and audit committees have responded to specific risks brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The workshop will be held from November 22-26, 2021 in UAE-Dubai, at Hyatt Regency Dubai Creek Heights. Charges are KES 140,000 plus VAT. The cost excludes accommodation. Members in attendance will earn 20 CPD points.

Target Audience: This workshop targets Board and Audit Committee Members, Heads of Internal Audit and Chief Executive Officers.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

Kenyan delegates need a tourist visa to travel to Dubai. Requirements for visa application include:   

  • An invitation letter from IIA Kenya
  • Hotel/accommodation reservation
  • Travel/medical insurance
  • Passport photo on a white background soft copy. (If your passport is clear the photo is not necessary)
  • Copy of your passport bio page
  • Visa processing fee of KES 11,000

The requirements for entering Dubai are:

  • A negative COVID-19 certificate not less than 72 hours (can be organized at KES 5,000 per person)
  • Download the COVID 19 DXB Smart App before arriving at DXB/DWC and fill in the required information.
  • Travel insurance (not a must but it’s good to be sure)
  • Fill any required form by the airline before boarding of the flight.
  • Valid visa
  • Valid passport
  • A COVID free certificate will be required both at exit and entry points (JKIA and DXB).

For non-Kenyan delegates, please enquire with your embassy and/or High Commission on the travel requirements. IIA Kenya will provide invitation letters to support delegates’ Visa processing.

ACCOMODATION

Delegates are expected to make their own accommodation arrangements.

NATIONAL INDUSTRIAL TRAINING AUTHORITY ACCREDITATION:

The Institute of Internal Auditors Kenya is an accredited training provider with the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA). The NITA registration number is DIT/TRN/558(25b). Participants who are registered levy contributors can apply to NITA for reimbursement of their fees. This applies for Kenyan citizens and is subject to NITA regulations.
